I wanted to have a way from the front page to offer links to certain categories – probably changing throughout the year as the seasons come and go.
So something like recent images or featured images, but instead of a collection of thumbs linked to the images, I wanted each thumb to have a link to the whole category. I didn’t want a second slider – no more movement! – and I wanted something reasonably compact.
I can fit 7 items across and I’ll keep a file with all the items and links (I’ve only done 7 so far as I’m not sure if I’ll use this – if there’s something better out there that’s easier, please enlighten me 🙂 )so I can rotate any given 7 in and out during the year.
I used the text widget with some HTML in the Home Page (After Content) area. The specific image numbers would vary by site as would the URLs, but just in case this is useful for anyone else, here’s the code:
Christmas
Maine beaches
Families
Cities
Autumn
Pacific Northwest
Halloween

I can’t seem to get the widget centered though.Steve

Or using the columns as I did for the text, you can indicate gaps as well. There were some alignment examples here too.

http://www.softlightstock.comOctober 26, 2013 at 6:23 pm #6283I have tried a couple of different methods that don’t require coding.
The first is to create sub pages with selected images inserted into the page. These pages are then inserted into the menu drop down.
The second is to create a category such as Discounted and then insert the category into the menu drop down. Here is a menu screen showing how this it done.
Just different ways of presenting images.
October 26, 2013 at 7:24 pm #6284I think it’s a great idea to “curate” some groups of images by putting together pages. My links are to existing categories, but with the pages you can make even more focused groups of images.
One thing I noticed was that if I click on one of the images – I tried the Hilo Gallery as well as the Prescott Gallery – I got a completely black screen with no images (I did see arrows on left and right sides as if it was going to be a slideshow), a comment box at the bottom and an X on the top left which looked like a way to close the overlay but which didn’t do anything when I clicked it.
What should I have seen when I clicked? I’m using Chrome on a Mac (OSX 10.8.5).
October 26, 2013 at 8:35 pm #6285another alternative is to set up pages with predefined searches:

to create contact sheets:

I recreated the Gallery but it is still broken. I have not check it in a while, I am wondering if something was broken in WP 3.6?
Thanks for letting me know, I will have to check it out.
October 26, 2013 at 9:03 pm #6287Discovered that there is a conflict with JetPack Carousel and WP image Gallery. I disable Carousel and the Gallery seems to work now.
November 1, 2013 at 6:55 pm #6288I’ve changed what I was doing a little bit because I wanted to put just a teaser on the front page to look at a gallery of thumbs for various categories. This is also properly responsive on small displays.
The gallery page is made using Gallery Pro and is accessed either through the teaser on the front page (above) or via the menus

I made those thumbs myself – they aren’t derived from the uploaded images. I had my teaser on the front page downsize the 250 x 202 to 125 x 101 so they didn’t overwhelm

JoAnn, I really like what you’ve done with that gallery page! May try something else for my site very soon.
Thanks for sharing the information and the link.
