This was taken from the main site and being posted here for convenience:
Chromaco of Teamclipart.comcreated a small overview of the last year for us.
- Approx 12 Months ago – Google drive is in full debate and some relatively unknown contributor makes a post on MSG about how self hosting is really not that hard.
- Approx 10 Months ago – This same contributor actually does what he says and releases a theme – for free!
- Approx 9 months ago – Some more adventurous artists build their own sites based on this theme and start helping with the debugging.
- Approx 8 months ago – The theme is simplified and streamlined so that an artist with no programming experience can actually build his own site that works and looks nice.
- Approximately 6 months ago- Dragonfly is available so that customization is even easier.
- Approx 5 months ago – enthusiasm peaks on MSG and the need for a new community forum is necessary.
- Approx 4 months ago – new forum is created along with a new community.
- Approx 1 month ago– focus is given to multi-language and forum is updated.
Why mince words, though? We need developers! In the meantime, things continue on surely and steadily, if not a little slower than we’d like.
Are You Still on 1.6.5? UPDATE.
At one crucial point a very large overhaul was needed, so we branched development into a so-called metamorphosis build (the pun being the larva of our little project would become a butterfly), and anyone who was involved with that continued to get updates. Anyone who did not enter that phase ended up with outdated sites. Your site may be outdated. Please take the time to get the most recent version of Symbiostock so that you can continue to progress with the network. The latest version is stellar! (DOWNLOAD)Without a doubt you will probably be intimidated by the process of converting into the latest version — having to set up widgets again, reset your menus — but its worth it and will not be required for at least another year. The Symbiostock Community is there to help you through every step.
A Rest is Needed
The start of Symbiostock was quite reactionary and feverish, in retrospect, with things moving a little fast for the average person. While we have quite a few high hopes, its probably more appropriate to slow down and let people enjoy a nice long stretch of stability. This means we will be ceasing the whirlwind of development since the rate of progress tends to be more stifling than helpful now that the network is bigger. So you can expect a nice relaxing year ahead, and any developments will be quietly pursued by a few people in comparison to the forum-frenzy of upgrades we started with.Sales: Some Have Lots, Some Have None
In my overzealousness, I had publicised examples of contributors that were experiencing good sales. The reaction was more negative than positive, and a lesson was learned. Truth be told, some who have launched websites with the Symbiostock project feel it was one of the best Stock Photo decisions they ever made. Others feel it was a giant waste of time, an investment that has yet to pay off. Whatever the case, the year was bitter-sweet.Here is a wonderful tutorial by Chromaco on how his daily Symbiostock sales were achieved: SEO Tutorial by Symbiostock’s Most Successful Webmaster
Get Involved with a Forward Moving Community
Symbiostock.orgis complete, and its beautiful. It was made to be relaxing and enjoyable. Please get involved and do not be shy. While I myself am taking a long break from the forums (they’ve been my main go-to in all Symbiostock things) the Symbiostock forums (aside from a few hiccups) are mostly a happy and calm environment which is conducive to progress. Like any software based forums, you will find they are filled with help requests, but also some other useful conversations. I would invite you to make use of them in any way you wish related to Stock Photo or general creativity. Its actually the moderators and original Symbiostockers themselves which seem to have created that atmosphere, and its one of the greatest achievements yet. Christine of http://kerioakimaging.com/ and JoAnnSnover of http://www.digitalbristles.com/ are largely to credit for that, and Dennis (Chromaco) has recently offered to stand in for me on quite a few things.Symbiostock Gets a Facebook Page!
Thanks to Shelma1 of http://vector999.com the network has a beautiful and well-maintained Facebook page. Like the community site, your invited to get involved and see the latest updates. The work she’s done is nothing short of amazing.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Symbiostock/466435486810556Cascoly and AJT – The Networks Most Awesome (and patient) Developers!
I’m amazed at how much AJT and Cascoly have done with the network, and how they’ve stayed a rather straight course the the ups and downs. Like many of Symbiostock’s first supporters, I’m very grateful for these two people. Here are there sites:http://cascoly.com/symbio/symbiostock-network.asp
Symbiostock Translation
Lucato from http://www.arquivoscriativos.com.br/ has been helping to make the Symbiostock theme translatable. This is actually an endeavour he has been doing largely by himself, and with great progress. After the groundwork has been laid, it will be a simple matter for anyone to translate Symbiostock’s interface into any other language. The Main Website – A Work in Progress
It took a year to even get a semi-good look on the main website. Its worth noting yet again this design is just an infant and does not reflect the finished goal. True, it was initially meant to be a queen-bee to turn out Symbiostock site eggs! But community vision has it turning into a sort of psuedo-agent, a general switch-track to send customers into the network, and a unification of the network. Since that seems to be the calling, it will take a lot of work and no doubt a lot of time. So while everyone is enjoying a nice year of Symbio-stability, I will be working on the general centralization of things. Granted, I was against that sort of thing in the beginning, but with a simplistic and calculated approach, it can no doubt be a success.More to be Said…
Please stop by the forums to get the latest on all the developments with Symbiostock. No doubt you will have questions if you need to upgrade or get involved. While a few people were acknowledged in this article, there are actually quite a few Symbiostock participants from the early days that have steadily stuck with us and helped all along. If anyone’s been left out from the list I apologize — its unquestionable that Symbiostock’s success is because of these patient supporters who stuck with it through the buggy months, and are still with it! The list would be very long (and indeed you can see the site list at the bottom of this post), but Symbiostock’s human support is really what had made it.To Move Forward, More Developers Will Be Needed…
The last year, I’ll admit, left me rather deflated. Thankfully things are quite stable now! But its unlikely I will be a very large influence from here on. Much better that we get some fresh energy and motivation into Symbiostock on the level of development. If anyone is reading this who has ideas for the network, do not hesitate to get involved. Feel free to speak to any of us on your ideas. The Present Symbiostock Site List (Feb 7, 2014) 171 Sites!
