I tried to add the Yoast SEO plugin, and now it’s charging a lot of money – whereas it’s free in my earlier Symbio legacy site. What’s the deal, did I stumble upon the wrong version of the plugin? How do I get the free Yoast SEO plugin?
Also, I’m using wordpress.org, but it looks like Jetpack is only available for wordpress.com sites – is this correct, or is there a way to use Jetpack with my .org login and Symbio site?

Yoast is definitely free but they plaster their plugin with ads for the paid version. Not sure what the paid version provides, but you don’t need to pay for sure.
Jetpack is also free, and no, you don’t need to just use it on WordPress.com but you need a WordPress.com account to activate it. It’s a little convoluted actually, and I don’t like it, but it offers a bunch of unique functions.
