When reviewing my images, I typed in as a search term “Lake Superior” and found correctly all my images from that location.
Underneath, in the Global Symbiostock Search Network Results, I see two other thumbnail images (by stompstock).
When I click directly on one of those images, I get a message “Error 403 – Forbidden”.
However, if I click on the Magnifying Glass Icon under the image, that image displays correctly. In summary, this problem doesn’t affect my images, only the similar images found on Symbio network.
Still a problem and nuisance for the buyers.September 25, 2013 at 11:11 am #3188It is not global search fault, but problem in stompstock site with “?r=http://……” appended to url.
September 25, 2013 at 12:20 pm #3189It is not from plrang plugin, I would say, that it is mainly *for* this plugin. Some hosting configurations have problem with that “r=”, looking like valid url after it.
Leo: maybe would be better to delete http:// from it, leaving only site address. I’ve tested it and it is ok in stompstock.
September 25, 2013 at 1:40 pm #3190I have to precise what I meant writing “for plrangs plugin”. Now it is, because only this plugin utilizes this info. In future there will be another plugins, Symbio hubs and maybe statistics mainstained by Cascoly. All of them would use that data. It is info for you, who is performing network search, leading to your site. For example, when site abc.com has your site in network, and someone is searching there for something, that site displays results from your site. Then, if that person clicks on your thumbnail there, he lands on your site with that r=abc.com. Then you (or plugins/stats you can have) will now, which site your visitor cames from.
And that other site doesn’t know, if its network partners utilize this info (if they have plugins like plrang’s for this or not), so it is appended for every network search.
As I said above, removing “http://” from it resolves all reported issues.September 25, 2013 at 2:33 pm #3191@cathyslife stockphotos wrote:
Thanks for the explanation, that is how i understood it would work.
But the fact still remains my utilizing the information will depend on my spending money to buy a plugin. If i choose not to buy the plugin, i dont want the data available to everyone else anyway, therefore, i dont want the extra url query stuff showing on my site and in my urls.
If i ever choose to separate from the network because i am not getting any sales, i should be able to make a total separation and yet still be able to sell my photos. it should not be set up so that developers get to continue to gather data from my site. That is how it should be, and that is how it was represented in the beginning of the SY project.
If a plugin has a certain functionality, all that is required for that specific functionality should be contained in the plugin.
All i am saying is that people should have the option. If someone wants to use that kind of data and pay for the plugin, cool. If they dont, there shouldnt be random code on their site.
NO – you don’t have to pay anything to use the data – most plugins are free
symbiostock.info is free
symbiostock-search.com is freemaking it an option destroys the basic premise of a GLOBAL search, and coordinating across 100s of sites would be a mess.
the data is there for ANYONE to use. it’s part of being in the network; you can use it individually, or benefit when other developers display your site and images.
this tag has been there for many versions now, with no previously reported problems, so it’s odd if problems are suddenly appearing
once more – it’s not a zero sum game, though some posts eeem to be thinking it is — ‘if it doesn’t help me right now, I don’t want to be helping anyone else’
September 25, 2013 at 3:40 pm #3192Unless it has changed in the last few days Plrang’s plug in is free, but like everyone else who is working on this he will accept donations.

Switch off networking on your own site
Contact everyone who is linked to you and ask them to remove your site from their network (Cascoly’s information would be useful for this unless you have kept all the emails letting you know when someone linked)
Ask Ajt and Cascoly to remove you from their lists
Wait for everyone’s sites to updateIt is not immediate but can be done over a few days as not everyone is around every day.

No, it is not a zero sum game, however, the main function of the site was always to sell images and that EVERYONE in the network would benefit from being connected. So far, a few are benefitting and most are not. If most of the people are not benefitting, it was told to us that there would be no harm…that we could disconnect from the network and continue with our site. But now it feels like people who disconnect will forever be tethered, and not to their advantage but to everyone elses.I still have a few months to go to make a decision on whether this whole project has been a success for me. But i would be remiss if i didnt start thinking of the future. I have no issue whatsoever in paying for plugins and things as long as i am making sales. But i cant afford to keep paying for things that are not absolutely necessary when i am making no sales, or when the things i have already paid for dont work correctly.
I dont know why you are so surprised that people are showing signs of disillusionment. If being networked has no advantages for most people, why would you imagine that they would want to stick around and provide help for those who are, in essence, competitors? It should be as it is named, symbiotic.
I have put a lot of my time and effort into this just as everyone has. Trust me, i would prefer to be making good sales and not even worrying about this.
you don’t seem to understand the concept of a non-zero sum game. instead it seems if YOU don’t make saes right away, the projects not working — but how are you or anyone else HURT by networking? if you don’t want to network – just turn it off! your site will still wor; you wont help anyone else by displaying their images, but the global searches will still show YOUR images! that’s parasitic rather than symbiotic, but it’s part of the design. the network is doing EXACTLY what it promised — increasing exposure for all.
as far as time spent – the theme’s only been active for a few months – we’re competing with agencies and free sites that have been around for years. you have about 600 images online, most in the most competitive areas– how many sales did you get from those before symbio? which is more LIKELY to help you — advertising your 600 images by yourself, or having others help by displaying them on searches? everyone IS benefiting from increased exposure. no one promised anyone would make anything on this project. but most of us continue to see this as superior to trying it alone. if you disagree, that’s your choice

it’s even easier — just turn off networking and no one will be able to link to your site, and previous links will no longer include the site in searches; it would of course be polite to notify those in your network that you’re opting out so they can use their links for someone else.

That’s very true, the whole system has been up really only a few months and very few prospective buyers even know about it at this time. And others may have already prepaid their subscription plans, so they have to use up their existing credits first. It’s a slow ship to turn around.
The key is to increase the exposure for the network – primarily by adding images, links, new sites. Maybe by next fall, we’ll have a million of images, and the effort will start paying off. I hate to say it, but we’ll have to move our best images from other sites to our own site, even if they won’t get initially noticed. Just keep on shooting and uploading!
October 1, 2013 at 4:18 pm #3197Hi everyone, my first post here and some of you may know me from MSG.
Don made me aware that my Symbiostock sites have this 403 issue and I wasn’t aware of it for weeks I assume. I’m totally freaking out.
Try this scenario:
1. Goto http://landwehrle.com/stockphotography/
2. Perform a search with the keyword “Miami” or use this URL: http://landwehrle.com/stockphotography/?s=miami&post_type=image
3. Scroll down on the search results page until you see the search results for my site: “Miami Skyline Network Results” and click on any of my images.
4. You are being directed to my web site but it will show a 403 error.
I’m waiting for a response from Hostgator and I know I didn’t get this 403 error months ago (using previous versions of Symbiostock or no or former plugins versions).
If there is anything I can try to do, please let me know so I can try to fix it.
Thanks in advance and hello to the community here 🙂
Carsten
October 1, 2013 at 5:26 pm #3198Everything ok, no 403 error. Have they fixed anything?
October 1, 2013 at 6:14 pm #3199do you have 2 active sites? http://miami-skyline.com being the other one?
from http://symbiostock-search.com when I do a search for ‘miami’ using http://stockphoto-images.com I get 0 results — and when I look at your actual keywords, there is no entry for ‘miami’
http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=203&site=http://stockphoto-images.com
using Miami skyline I get results and clicking takes me to that site

so, did you somehow delete the Miami keyword from your images? (maybe using the batch editor in pro version?)

WOW, you are right, I just tested it again and it worked on both sites.
Hmm, no idea now if Hostgator did something or Leo :O ?!?!
Anyway, I’m holding my breath that nothing changes from now on…
Thanks for checking btw.

If I understand correctly, everything works as it should.
Miami-Skyline.com was supposed to be a testing platform for my first Symbiostock installation. Furthermore I wanted to only offer Miami skyline related products (Zazzle etc.).
Therefore I only uploaded non-Miami stuff to my “main” site stockphoto-images.com which shouldn’t contain any images related to Miami.
