I don’t really know how web crawlers find all the pages and images in our sites, but I assume one route is following the categories from the home page. I don’t have a full menu item of my categories – just some selected ones in a carousel. Do I need to put a menu item of all my categories or does this not matter?

It doesn’t matter I think, but much better if you put some categories menu in your home page so visitors can easily access your full image collections

Thanks – I tidied up my categories a bit and added them all to the carousel with a nice image illustrating the category. That should do it!

They usually follow the sitemap. Make sure you have one or more.

Your tags will basically give Google everything – every time it finds an image with a tag, it will find 50 more, exponentially. WordPress is organized in a way that it is very hard to hide any content from search engines. Other than meta titles, descriptions, and URLs, I don’t worry much about internal linking anymore.
