The following is a useful SEO strategy for getting indexed with every significant search engine in 2014.
Every time you submit an image, its possible for you to notify, literally, every important search engine out there concerning the update. Also you can inform other services as well.
This can help you get an instant visit from a relevant service/search engine, or at least get added to their queue.
This is an advanced trick, and must be done carefully. I’ve avoided posting this because it may cause issues with inexperienced webmasters, who may not realize where side-effects are coming from if not set up properly.
NOTE: There will be 1 side effect:
Your upload process will slow down, because for the first image it will be pinging the sites concerning the new upload. If your site server limits you to 30 second script-times, that this will reduce the total number of images you can upload at once. Small problem, though, considering the benefits.STEP 1:
Get the PING OPTIMIZER plugin for wordpress.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-ping-optimizer/
SImply search “WordPress Ping Optimizer” in your ADD NEW plugin screen. Activate.
STEP 2:
Copy this list:
http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2
http://rpc.pingomatic.com/
http://feedburner.google.com/fb/a/pingSubmit?bloglink=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.YourDomain.com
http://www.bing.com/webmaster/ping.aspx?siteMap=www.YourDomain.com/sitemap.xml
http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.YourDomain.com/sitemap.xml
http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http://www.YourDomain.com/sitemap.xml
http://rpc.twingly.com
http://rpc.weblogs.com/pingSiteForm?name=BlogTitle&url=http%3A%2F%2fwww.YourDomain.com
http://geourl.org/ping?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.YourDomain.comIn that list, replace “http://www.YourDomain.com” with your actual domain. Mine of course was “http://www.clipartillustration.com“.
NOTE: Its much easier to do a find-replace operation in a basic text editing or word program.
The next list is optional. Keep in mind that the more ping sites you have, the longer the image processing step will take! So use this only if your absolutely adamant to update every single service presently known to man in 2014.
NOTE: This list might be a little excessive. If your site is taking a LONG time to process images as a result, do not include this list. The top one is far more important. This will be different based on your server, your server’s location, etc.

Assuming you set up the first list properly, and (optionally) added the second list to it, now:
Go to the Settings page of your new plugin: WordPress Ping Optimizer.
You will see a box for pasting the URL list you’ve just built. Paste all URLs into that box.
Ensure “[x] Enable Pinging” is checked.
MOST IMPORTANT: Check the option [x]Limit excessive pinging in short time.
If you do not check ” Limit excessive pinging in short time ” your site will hammer every site on the ping list with every image processed. This plugin ensures that you are not spamming your new list. If I’m not mistaken, a queue will be built pinging them in the future for every new image.
IMPORTANT: If you deactivate this plugin, go to Settings -> General and delete the ping list (or you will end up hammering the sites on batch upload, as mentioned above.
IMPORTANT This list changes yearly. Be sure to update it occassionally. Simply do a search for “2014 Ping List”. You’ll always find a site hosting a good list. Some are more relevant than others.
February 17, 2014 at 12:11 am #9804Thanks Leo for your heads-up on this.
I am using ping lists for quite a while. This is part of the standard WP and can be configured here: wordpress dashboard > settings > writing
What added value does the WP Ping Optimizer provide compared to standard WP, I wonder?

It stops you from spamming 😕
People don’t write blog-posts 10-per-30second-period. But when you upload, that is what you are actually doing. Ping optimizer moderates that process.
February 17, 2014 at 2:26 am #9806Thanks for this Leo, I have just a question: if the images will be indexed immediately they will not be indexed with description in Header2 Style and without categories (it takes me from 10 min. to one hour – depends how many images I upload) to edit the description, put categories, ecc. If they will be indexed before are edited what will happen? Is not a good thing I suppose. Explain me better how it works. Thanks.

I’m not certain every service will jump to the site instantly … usually you enter a queue. Even then, edits you make will also initiate the ping list.
I wouldn’t worry too much – an active and updating site is a good way to keep search engines interested.

I see. Wish I could upload/process images within 10 to 30 second-periods, though .
However, I am working on preparing a 2000+ images batch for speedy uploading and processing while still doing all the Yoast SEO. When I am ready, I guess, I better ping with the plugin, then. Thanks again for bringing this up.

One more thing – if you save-to-draft that won’t initiate a ping. Publishing them will.
February 17, 2014 at 3:04 am #9810This may be a dumb question, but when I add my domain in the listing, do I include the sub directory? My site is actually at http://www.photomining.com/s/ .

Not a dumb question.
Each sub-directory has a different word press install? Then you’d have to do this for each one separately.
February 17, 2014 at 3:25 am #9812Thanks, I have an old blog on a different sub, so I put the store in a different one. Altogether I’ve managed to get myself down to only two websites, 2 stores and 3 WP installs. 🙂
February 17, 2014 at 3:59 am #9813I set up my Ping List following the tutorial and did a find and replace to enter in my site in place of the “your domain” info. Some were successful but I got different error messages on others, as noted below. How do I correct these, especially since it seems that there were different issues with different sites?
Editing to add: I notice that other ping lists just list the site to be pinged and do not have individual site extensions with direction to sites or sitemaps. I’m guessing Leo added that for additional SEO and wondered if I need to change something else in those extensions.

February 17, 2014 at 6:15 am #9814Try again if you can. Clicking the links you just posted it seems they work fine. If you get any errors simply delete the ones that don’t go through (or correct the errors if its in your ability)
Interesting error on the feedburner one. I might have to add the Image Feed to the top of the header.
February 17, 2014 at 9:06 pm #9815I get two of them green, 14 blue and the rest red (failed) for various reasons. Is this normal or should they all be green all the time?
I previously had the list in the Settings area of WP so no idea what was going on before

It can be a hit-or-miss with ping lists. They change often. Just delete the ones that repeatedly do not work. You can find various lists online to experiment with.
Don’t micromanage it too much — 6 or six success is plenty. 14 is great.
February 17, 2014 at 11:02 pm #9817Just a note on this (I might be wrong – leo?), but in the suggestions in the OP it has url’s that end with “sitemap.xml”
If you are using Yoast you probably won’t have that file. You will have “sitemap_index.xml”
